Centella Asiatica is a small herbaceous plant native to Australia, Africa and parts of Asia. Also known at Gotu Kola, Luei Gong Gen and Asiatic Pennywort, it is used as a medicinal herb in both Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine.
Popular in Sri Lanka, Gotu Kola (conical leaf) is used as a cooking ingredient and considered highly nutritious, whilst in Thailand, leaves infused in hot water form a popular ‘pick me up’ drink. Many in Asia believe that elephants' longevity is down to their consumption of the plant and it is also nicknamed ‘Tiger Herb’ because tigers actively seek it out to rub against when wounded.
In Chinese mythology the Tai Chi Chuan master, Li Ching Yun is reported to have lived to the age of 256, due in part to his usage of Chinese herbs, including Gotu Kola. Sri Lankan folklore tells of a 10th century king named Aruna who claimed that Gotu Kola provided him with enough energy to satisfy the 50 women in his harem!
Centella is antibacterial, anti viral, anti-inflammatory and anti-ulcerogenic. Its ability to help reduce inflammatory reaction to skin damage and in the minimisation of scarring is well documented. Known to stimulate the production of type one collagen, it aids in the production of connective tissue and is employed in the treatment of leprosy. It is also proven to have positive results in the treatment of vascular and circulatory problems whilst research into the effectiveness of centella as a memory enhancer is currently ongoing.
